| The Rise and Fall of Gods |
[Apr. 4th, 2011|11:44 am] |
Today is Qing Ming, traditional day of remembering the dead and honouring my ancestors in the Chinese culture. My ancestors and relatives who have passed on reside in places that are too far away for my burnt paper money to reach them, I don't think that kind of currency has a overseas transfer system. So while my heart goes out to them, this entry is about another death that has occured recently - the disbandment of the Korean boyband Dong Bang Shin Ki and the end to their musical career as a five man group. It's trivial, it's superficial, but they've been such a huge part of my life the past 7 years.

| Sojourn Days Part 1 - Hostel Days |
[Mar. 10th, 2010|12:58 am] |
I've decided to start blogging because I'm sick of sending the same pictures three times and repeatedly recount my stories to people on chat and hopefully with these entries I'll end my one post a year streak - that is, I will post more often. I've been here for more than five weeks now so my memory is already starting to become a little bit fuzzy, but hopefully I can still remember enough to make this interesting. I will definitely post more often from today onwards, especially since I'm leaving for Germany in three days (Isn't it exciting?)
But enough with the ranting, here goes:
( I would rather not repeat the experience of lugging around two suitcases in high heels whilst it's snowing. ) |

It's too easy to manipulate the results, so I took another one, with the desired result:
| Which TVXQ member will fall in love with you? | | Hero Youngwoong JaeJoong oh my gosh! i can't believe you got this hottie! He's such a hot hottie! He's so cute in glasses. Anywas, he might seem cold and shy at first but he'll warm up to you and treat you like his little princess. |

I must NOT let this journal die. Though there's surprisingly little content in this entry it's at least SOMETHING.

And there you have it.
More later, Yang. |

| You Are 50% Boyish and 50% Girlish | You are pretty evenly split down the middle - a total eunuch. Okay, kidding about the eunuch part. But you do get along with both sexes. You reject traditional gender roles. However, you don't actively fight them. You're just you. You don't try to be what people expect you to be. |

| Foodfest at Doro's |
[Jul. 16th, 2006|11:39 pm] |
How do you test the elasticity of your stomach? Dorothy has the answer to that when we entertained at the house her parents mortgaged last Wednesday and Thursday (12th, 13th). Movies, friends, camwhoring, and of course the endless rounds of food, this sleepover proved to be rewarding to more than just our stomachs.

| Lyrics to Guang Liang's Tong Hua (Fairy Tale) |
[Jun. 3rd, 2006|02:03 am] |
I absolutely adore this song, it's sang by Guang Liang from his 1st album, it's adorable, and the mv always make my eyes puff up. Here is the lyric in pinyin:
Wang le you duo jiu, Zai mei ting dao ni, He wo shuo ni, zui ai de gu shi. Wo xiang le hen jiu, Wo kai shi huang le, Shi bu shi wo you, zuo cuo le shen me.
Ni ku zhe dui wo shuo, Tong hua li dou shi pian ren de Wo bu ke neng, shi ni de wang zi Ye xu ni bu hui dong Cong ni shuo ai wo yi hou, Wo de tian kong, xing xing dou liang le.
Wo yuan bian cheng tong hua li, Ni ai de na ge tian shi, Zhang kai shuang shou Bian cheng chi bang shou hu ni. Ni yao xiang xin Xiang xin wo men hui xiang tong hua gu shi li Xing fu he kuai le de jie ju.
Ni ku zhe dui wo shuo, Tong hua li dou shi pian ren de Wo bu ke neng, shi ni de wang zi Ye xu ni bu hui dong Cong ni shuo ai wo yi hou, Wo de tian kong, xing xing dou liang le.

Wo hui bian cheng tong hua li, Ni ai de na ge tian shi, Zhang kai shuang shou Bian cheng chi bang shou hu ni. Ni yao xiang xin Xiang xin wo men hui xiang tong hua gu shi li Xing fu he kuai le de jie ju. Yi qi xie wo men de jie ju.
This song is so sad and sweet.
Woot, and due to *ahem* popular... *ahem* demand, here's the translation:
Forgotten how long ago it was, Since I've heard you Tell me the story that you love the most. I have waited for a long time, I am beginning to panic, Did I do something wrong again?
You said to me whilst crying, What's in the fairytales are all lies, I can't possibly be your angel. Actually, you won't understand- After you said you love me, In my sky, All the stars have brightened.
I wish to become, in the fairytales, The angel that you love the most. Open my arms, turn them into wings to protect you. You must believe, Believe that we will be like in the fairytale stories Have "happily ever after" as our ending.

| I can't be objective here... |

Wow.
I'm sure that this thought would've crossed the many minds of teens who have overbearing Chinese immigrant parents (or just plain overbearing parents). But when you really READ something like this, when it is this real and you can relate to each and every detail of the situation. The reality just hits you like a hammer.
Needless to say that I couldn't help but look further into the case, leading me to Esmie's livejournal and court hearings, her pleads etc etc, and of course, the various opinions on the case. What surprised me was that there were lots of outcries about how she's still a kid and should be trialed in a juvenile court, and how the sentence and laws are ambiguous, but not many people were sympathetic of what her situation BEFORE she committed the crime was. I have to say after seeing pictures like this I was more than a little put off by her as well. But, the further I think into the situation, the less detached I become, her story has only too many parallels with mine and many other kids. It's impossible to just dismiss her act as one of stupidity and short sightedness.
The more I think of it, the less I see her as a murderer. I mean, anyone who has had a mother would understand that even though they drive you nuts, you still love them, can you picture yourself picking up a knife and stabbing her? (If you can please don't tell me, I will slowly distance myself from you.) Her mother may have been overbearing, not knowing limits, passively abusing her child, but she must have loved her. Though in the wrong way... Of course, that is not to say that Esmie's actions are justified in any way, but I know her situation only too well: never being able to satisfy your parent, always on the cusp of two cultures and two sets of values, forever confused about your own standards. Though I doubt I will have the capacity of violence that she has, I still feel lucky that my parents know where the line is, or at least, we've reached a wordless agreement to where that line is. No where near where my parents want it to be, or where I want it to be, but at least it is there. Perhaps this is the crux of immigration, this is the first and final and most important challenge that lie ahead, and unable to overcome this will only end in what happened here.
So ultimately, Esmie Tseng is the victim, as her mother was, to the cross generational/cross cultural gap between them. And it has sucked them both in. |
